Water damage

Excess moisture or flooding can be so devastating to structures and personal property. The problem becomes more serious when the water is dirty or clean-up services do not come on time.  Destruction can be from the furniture to family heirlooms, office computers to production machinery, building foundations and floors, roof/ ceiling, walls amongst others Whether it is water damage from flooding rains or from a burst pipe or leaky appliances, your health may be at risk if corrective measures are not taken immediately and correctly. Major water damage can lead to foul odors, poor indoor air quality, and most importantly–toxic mold growth. Preventing mold growth is key to keeping your home’s air clean and healthy.

To determine if the property can be restored or must be replaced, call your insurance company as you put the following issues into consideration:

  • The extent of Property Damage
  • Degree of Contamination
  • Replacement Costs vs. Restoration Costs

If the cleanup process is not hastened and professionally done, water damage can cause major business interruption, financial burdens and potential health risks. So in addition to calling your insurance company, Miami- Dade restoration offers a few tips to deal with to minimize the water damage;

Disconnect the power, unplug any electronics, and remove electronics, office records, furniture, carpets and movable items immediately. The prompt you act and get items out of water’s way, the bigger the probability that more items will be able to be saved.

Get rid of the water. As you get rid of the water, it is important to remember that water and electricity do not mix. If the water is overwhelming and you have power, consider renting or buying (if available) a sump pump or a wet/dry vacuum can be used too. The water can also be mopped up and dried out manually. Old towels, buckets and mops can be used to soak up as much water as possible. You can pour the water down the drain, onto your lawn or other permeable surface. Getting rid of all the water and drying out the area is the best and most important step to take to prevent mold growth.

Dry out the affected area. Once you’ve mopped up all the water, open windows and doors to allow for more air circulation and faster drying. The fans and a dehumidifier can also be used to help dry out the area.

Disinfect. Use a good disinfectant to get rid of any bacteria that might have come up through sewers, toilets, etc. after the area has dried out.  Disinfect all areas and every property that was affected by the waters including walls and wood and non-upholstered furniture that sat in the flood water.

Prevent mold growth. After you’ve disinfected and let the area thoroughly dry out, Miami- Dade Restoration will offer the best services to mitigate the growth of molds on the walls, furniture or any other item that was affected by water.

Dispose of damaged items responsibly:  Dispose off the electronics and other recyclables as stipulated by the waste management center’s in your neighborhood, while take the rest to appropriate dumpster as you clean up the vicinity.

Repair or restore the damaged parts: This is another recovery step that is important in getting life back to normal. Consult the Miami-Dade Restoration center and all your needs will be appropriately taken care of.
